The Tiburon
I normally shy away from personal posts since I like this site to be more about my work, however, I just bought a new car and buying a new car is a major event (well, for most people).
My decision came down to the Tiburon and the Jetta. Everyone I talked to suggested that I get the Jetta since it got better gas mileage and was a better brand name. I test drove both, and the Jetta was a smoother ride, but the heart wants what the heart wants. The Tiburon was just an awesome looking car and I felt cool driving it. Only a few people seem to understand this, but whatever, I’m really happy with my decision. Below you can see some pics:

A good friend of mine was joking with me that it was a “panty remover”, which I thought was even funnier after my second day driving it home:
So I had just driven home from the gym after a long day at work. As I was pulling into the driveway I noticed there was a group of teenage girls, probably 15-16 years old, ogling my car. After getting out of the car I heard a couple of them shout:
“Hey! Hi! Who are you?”
So I turned around, somewhat confused, and said “Me?”
“Yeah”
They all looked pretty young, and I wasn’t sure what was up, so I just said “hi”, waved my hand, and went on my way. Later in the evening I decided to go out with my brother. I noticed the girls were still out there and they again said hi. When we got back home, an hour later (we were buying DVDs – Venture Bros season II), they were still there. However, this time, as I was getting out of my car, one of them ran up to me excitedly and said:
“Hey! What’s your name?”
I was actually kind of astonished this was happening. I looked at her and she was pretty cute. However, no way was she older than 16. So I replied: “Me? I’m Patrick”
“Patrick What?”
“Patrick Gillespie”
She smiled and replied “I’m ***** *****, I live in the house behind that one” (and pointed to some house)
I said it was nice to meet her and then she smiled and we said our good byes and she ran back to her friends. However, I was totally floored by that. No way would those girls have been like that had I driven up in my crappy old Kia, or in the family friendly Jetta. I can’t believe a nice looking car has that kind of effect. I so wish I had one when I was 16!
One of my friends was trying to tell me that in Maryland it was legal to date a 16 year old, however, no way would I do that. I think that’d just be too weird. However, I thought the whole thing was really cute. Was I actually the cool guy all the high school girls were interested in, just because of my car? That’s crazy!
Anyway, so far the car has been great and hopefully this isn’t a one time effect
(except maybe next time it’ll grab the eye of some older females).
Hi Pat – I totally concur with your local tweens – hot car! As for the whole May/December romance, you can “date” a 16-year-old girl in Maryland just don’t “date” her…if you know what I mean. Something about those pesky statutory laws once you’re over 21. Cheers!
My friend was trying to imply the “date” I think. Everyone I tell this story to seems to have a different impression on what the law actually is. I thought it was illegal for anyone over 18 to date anyone under 18. This whole “16 is legal” thing seems totally out of right field (though if it applies to those under 21, maybe that makes sense). I felt dirty after going on a date with a 20 year old though. So I think I’ll put my cut off at 21.
Cute Car! Great pic of you too.
best,
Dave
