Forums!

It’s late and if I don’t get to bed soon I’m going to be sincerely sorry in the morning (I’ve got a 9:30 meeting – only early if you consider the fact I’ll be going to bed at 2). So it’s finally here. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell anyone who will listen, patorjk.com has forums again:

Please sign up and make a post – feel free to write about anything as long as it makes sense for the category in which its posted. If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Some side notes: I deleted my old forum installation and reinstalled a new one. I saw that two of you had created user names. I didn’t purposely delete your user names. I’m assuming those of you who signed up for the forum found it via Google. For some reason it showed up as the 4th link for when you do a search for “patorjk” (it’s moved down a little now). At the time I figured I’d let it be since it’d probably make for an interesting find for anyone who was randomly searching for stuff.

  1. I tried to join earlier today, but was told the database could not connect, and to try again when it was not as busy. I tried returning to the blog to comment about it, but was hit with repeated 500 internal server errors. Were you working on the configuration, or was the site just down temporarily?

  2. Thanks for the feed back on the error messages.

They weren’t because of me. I’ve been at work all day. However, I did notice the database error. Every time that happens I get an email. Luckily it appears to have only happened once.

However, I didn’t get the blog error, which leads me to believe it was some kind of site5 (my host) error. If it happens again let me know.

Site5 has so far been an excellent host, however, since this site is growing at a decent rate and uses lots of server side web apps, I’m not sure if they’ll continue to be the best option. I’m uncertain what the bandwidth/traffic threshold is before being on a shared host becomes a problem.

Are you on a shared host? What host do you use?

  3. I use one of DreamHost’s shared hosting plans, which are extremely affordable, and offer way more than I could ever use, or even need. It’s nice because each week my account receives a very large amount of added bandwith, and storage allotment, but I don’t believe I have even used 1% of my total disk space. I’ve only had an issue with traffic on one single ocassion, which lasted for a period of a week, but it was due to the fact that I had over 15,000 unique visitors on a single day with several million requests for content, and my account managed to overload the entire server.
Other than that I have had nothing but good experiences with their services. I see a lot of people complain about down-time, but when there is it is short-lived, and they generally give an advanced warning before doing maintenance.
