How Fast Do You Press Each Key When You Type?

I’ve updated my Typing Speed Test with a new feature that lets you see how fast you typed each key on the keyboard. Once you finish the test, you’re presented with a visualization of the keyboard where the keys that were typed faster are more red and the keys that were typed slower are less red. Keys that are completely white were not typed at all and grey keys aren’t factored into the calculations. To see stats about an individual key, all you have to do is mouse over the key you’re interested in. Below you can see a screen capture of the feature.

Let me know if you see any problems. I still have two major features I want to add into this app before I move onto my next project.

EDIT March 26, 2009: I’ve updated the visualization. Blue now represents key that were typed slowly and red represents keys that were typed quickly.

  1. My comment– if the text for the text includes punctuation, include it in your validation. Or at least don’t have it count against you. I went three times getting almost every word wrong before I realized it was because I was typing the punctuation, which threw off the “which word is she on” results.

  2. Correction – I think it counts the punctuation, I just keep getting off by a word =D Sorry.

  3. Yep, it counts punctuation. I’ve also had the problem of being off by one word too. It usually happens when I start to really get into the groove of things and just make one little mistake. I’m thinking of changing it so that if you don’t type the correct word, it’ll block on that word (without clearing out your inputted text) until you’ve typed the correct word.

Thanks for this feed back. I’d actually been wondering if that had been happening to anyone else. My other thought was to make it go character by character, but I like the idea of letting the user backspace to fix a word (so it doesn’t hurt there total “Words Correct” count).

  4. Ok, I’ve updated it so that it blocks on incorrect words. I think this works a lot better. It’ll keep people from getting confused when they make a mistake and it’ll force them to fix their mistakes. Thanks again for the feed back!
