90s Chain Letter Archive

Welcome!

E-mail chain letters were one of the earliest forms of viral media on the internet. These emails typically consisted of a message or story followed by an incentive to forward the email on to a certain number of people. Sometimes this incentive was something as silly as "your crush will fall in love with you", and sometimes it was as dark as "you will die in 10 days if you don't send this to 10 people".

For the most part these letters were a nuisance. People would pass them on either for superstitious reasons or because they found the contents of the letter amusing. If you spent any time in an AOL chat room in the 90's (AOL chat rooms were the Discord of the 90's) you probably received one of these letters, as people would often use these rooms to find emails to meet the chain letter's recipient quota.

Occasionally these letters made me laugh, and one day I decided to start collecting the best ones I came across. As you'll see in a moment, this collection is rather small, but that's only because most of these letters were lame or uninteresting. Basically they were a primitive form of a social media post that asks you to share it.

I have mixed feelings about not saving more of these though, as they now stand as relics of the early internet and precursors to today's viral content. You'll hear people say "the internet is forever" - but that's not true at all. Stuff disappears from the internet all the time, and email is especially ephemeral.

Chain letters may have been obnoxious, but they were a part of the early internet. Below is my collection. Most of these letters are very immature, but that's because they were made by teens for teens. I've kept their content unchanged, but I have adjusted the formatting and colors in places to make them easier to read. What follows may be juvenile and dated, but it's also a genuine artifact of how the internet first learned to be social.
