I read an interesting fact the other day. It stated that if you added up all of the views of Psy’s Gangnam Style, it would equate to over 13,000 years of human viewing time. I thought it was a pretty trippy concept, and since I’d sort of been looking for a reason to play with YouTube’s API, I thought it might be kind of cool to make a quick app around the idea.
You can see it in action here – Years Spent Watching YouTube.
Let me know if you have any suggestions for example videos.
I like to think that play is essential to our intellect and creativity, so I’m not so sure those hours are wasted watching silly YT videos. Also, there is evidence laughter is good medicine, as the old saying goes. Its a cool insight into YouTube. It would be interesting to explore a bit deeper. It would be nice to know how much time YouTube users spend watching video, who watches the most? I know, I know, that would violate privacy.
I agree, I don’t think it’s time wasted, just interesting.
Google probably does a ton of behind the scenes analysis, but due to privacy issues (like you said) they probably wouldn’t give that data out.
